Medications have not worked. I opted to try ECT. While there are some undesired side effects (such as the effect it has had on my ability to remember things) it has also helped me gain some of my life back. I have been able to return to work on a part-time basis, I no longer plan my demise every waking moment and I have the energy to actually go out and interact with the world. It is done on an outpatient basis. They put me to sleep for just a few minutes, shock me, then take me to a recovery area where I wake up and the nurse helps me dress and wheels me out to my mom's waiting car. I usually go home and sleep for a few more hours. Initially, they were doing treatments 3 times a week but I am down to once a week. ECT is not as barbaric as it once was. I have absolutely no recollection of the shocks they have given me since I'm very much asleep. I really think it is a personal decision and it may not work for everyone. After 6 treatments, we almost have our son back. He can feed and dress himself independently now. He can now smile and laugh again He is toilet-trained again. Unethical? Not in our case. Think again.
